39 Weeks Pregnant

Only five per cent of babies are born on their expected due date… much to the dismay of the wife, or “Chunk” as I like to call her (For those of you old enough to remember the “Truffle Shuffle”, the name Chunk will bring a smile to your face).

Most doctors and midwives will wait another two weeks before considering the baby’s overdue. Let’s hope we won’t have to wait too long for the long-anticipated event.

38 Weeks Pregnant

The due date is right around the corner and baby’s just waiting for the right time to be born.

It’s continuing to build a layer of fat, which will help control it’s body temperature after birth and will put on more weight (boys tend to be slightly heavier than girls… does this give us a clue as to what we’re having?).

The Mrs is continually being told to take it easy during the final week or so… but the OCD re her work is a hard habbit to kick… only the tiredness seems to slow her down!

Everything is more-or-less sorted now with nothing really left to buy (Apart from the iMac and Blu Ray home theatre kit but I’m still struggling to get a PO for those).

I’m now hoping to spend some quality time with the Mrs now as it will probably be our last chance to have an evening or two out together for a while. Nevermind – I think Big Brother or Eastenders may take priority though!

37 Weeks Pregnant

Only two weeks or so to go! This week, the baby is busy shedding its downy coating of fine hair (called lanugo) and its coat of vernix caseosa — the cheesy substance that protects the baby’sdeveloping skin. Nice. Apparently the baby swallows both of these secretions, which stay in the bowels until birth. Double nice.

Sticking with the trend of pleasantries, the baby will then excrete a blackish waste called meconium that becomes its first bowel movement.

If you’re still reading this, there is more palatable news… We go to the hospital next week for a scan due to the bump’s increasing size (currently 2.5cm’s bigger than it should be)… depending on the results the wife could be induced on the very same day!

At the end of this week, we’re going to reach an important pregnancy milestone — the baby will be considered full-term.

That means could theorhetically the wife could drop any day now!

As the baby gradually drops down in to the pelvis in preparation for the birth, Sian’s lungs and stomach will finally be able to stretch out a little so she’ll breathe more easily.

Another milestone is the trips to the loo – 4 last night!

Apparently by now baby doesn’t have much room to roam… which is a mystery as the bump constantly kicks and punches Mummy from day to day yet still manages to be 3 cm’s bigger than it should be!

As it stretches and skirms the bump takes on all manner of shapes and odd sizes as the heads moves towards engagement (This is where the head may drop down into the pelvis ready for birth).

Let the countdown begin. This week marks the beginning of our last month of pregnancy!

By now the baby should have fully developed lungs all the better for crying with when it’s born. No Branston Pickles yet, but plenty of kicking still.

Looks like Baby is finally making its way head-down in the uterus (although it seems to still be doing cartwheels).

Jr’s skull bones are still pliable to help ease through the birth canal when the big day arrives. The Mrs is now in the period where mild, irregular contractions known as Braxton Hicks (practice contractions) may turn up and later become more noticeable as the days go by

Baby is plumping up nicely, In fact, it’ll gain a third to half of its birth weight during the next seven weeks, fattening up for survival outside the womb.

Thanks to these fatty deposits, Jr’s skin is getting plumper and looking healthier too.

It’s getting more and more cramped yet Jr still seems to be jumping around on a trampoline in there!

By this stage, most babies have turned head down into the “cephalic” position ready for birth… obviously no baby of ours is gonna do things normally. A few babies take a little longer and a few remain stubbornly upright in the “breech” position but there’s still time for it to turn.

30 Weeks Pregnant

Good news — at this point baby’s lungs and digestive tract are nearly mature, meaning it’ll do much better in the event of it “popping” out early.

Researchers also believe your baby can actually see now, in utero, but no one knows exactly how much it can make out.

It’s also becoming more cramped in there – apparently it is less able to move so freely, which is obviously why when it does freak out like a drummer from a rock band, it’s a little noticable!
